One of the main reasons I decided to work in tax was because I wanted the intellectual challenge – I knew I wanted that to be an element of my work as I’d enjoyed that element of university. And so enrolled onto my first ATT exam as soon as I could, to start the journey to becoming CTA qualified.
I thought with technical knowledge and skill alone, I was going to be this all great tax advisor. But that’s only part of what makes a great tax advisor – there are many other skills that are needed too.
I didn’t fully appreciate this until a few years into my tax career, but it would have been useful for me to have known earlier.
So, in this episode, I share with you 5 skills that, in my opinion. you should master early on in your tax career to give you the solid foundations to build upon in the future.

Their resources are where I usually start all my tax research. I’ve used it for over 7 years, and I think it’s great.
There’s detailed guidance, high-level guidance, overview guidance, case law, legislation, and more.
My personal favourite is the “in-depth” guidance.
