TTPP52: The One THING to Get What You Want From Your Tax Career

Back in 2021, I set myself a goal – to become tax senior manager (SM) within 18 months of becoming tax manager, whilst only working my core hours.

I knew it was an optimistic goal, but I wanted to try what I’d learnt from reading The One THING: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results, by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan.

And the book had encouraged me to set a ‘big’ and challenging goal.

When I set the goal, I had about a year to achieve it.

I used the principles from the book to figure out what mini goals I needed to achieve to reach my bigger goal. I had faith and skepticism. But I thought I had nothing to lose so I gave it a go.

To my surprise, I got offered to become SM 14 months after becoming manager. I was so happy, but it wouldn’t have happened without this book. That may sound daft, but I completely believe it.

And because of that, I want to share the principles with you, via my experiences, so that you can apply them to your own tax career, to achieve what you want.

Whilst the goal I set was to obtain a promotion, it doesn’t have to be used like that. Perhaps your goal is to work part-time, not work excessive hours, become tax partner by a set age, or even write a tax book.

You can use the principles to achieve whatever you want out of your tax career. The principles focus your mind on what you really want and then what you need to do to achieve it.

Not only that, but it ensures that you spend time working on these goals each week.

Listen to find out how to apply the approach yourself!
